"Empowering youth of the Greater Toledo Area to succeed in life."

IN THE COMMUNITY

A very large part of our program is Community Involvement. As part of
the I.B.C family, we’ll participate in the existing Gloves with Love
Program. This program teaches youth the importance of giving back to our
community and working together to make it a better place, and they get
the concept.

Mentors, tutors, and youth leaders have selflessly volunteered hundreds
of hours to make sure success is a now a bigger part of their lives than
failure. They understand that strong academics and solid grades make
them true champions. So now, it’s their turn to make a difference. Each
month, they help cook and serve meals to the homeless at St. Paul’s
Community Center. They volunteer to help the Special Olympics, Big
Brothers & Big Sisters and The Victory Center.

We reach out globally as well. Our teenagers, who often have little
themselves, create and sell hand crafted objects to help pay for tuition
and school supplies for young boys in Eburru, Kenya, a food and water
insecure African village. Along the way, they learn what charitable
giving really means, why social services are crucial in Toledo, Ohio and
Eburru, Kenya, and why the smallest donation makes such a large difference.

Our current project is helping a single mother of 3 who has been
battling cancer for years and, due to medical bills, does not have the
financial means to give her children a Christmas this year. The
children, ages 14, 4, and 2, are what keep her going and mean the world
to her. She said that her last wish would be to ensure that she and her
children spend Christmas together this year. That's where Beat The
Streets Toledo and the I.B.C come in to play. We have teamed up to make
this wish a reality. If you would like to help us and this family,
please contact us. DMT Computers of Michigan has generously donated a PC
with all software, hardware, speakers, mouse, keyboard and possibly 2
handsets for the little ones. Moos Printing & Advertising has donated a
large tree with lights and stand and we are still working on many more
partnerships. Please help us change this family's life forever.

We are a proud partner of The University of Toledo's Big Event

We have recently developed a partnership with Master Gardener, Mary Beth
DeMatteo, who plans to teach participants how to landscape our facility
and create a successful community garden. The students will learn
everything from landscape design and garden design to actual
construction, developing skills that can help feed their families and
the community.

With the extremely high poverty rate in our area, our greatest hope is
to play a part in decreasing the violence and crime in our area that is
currently 1.72 times the national average. Community involvement is a
vital part of helping our kids feel empowered to make positive changes
in their lives and in the lives of others.

" I ask you to join in a re-United States. We need to empower our people so they can take more responsibility for their own lives in a world that is ever smaller, where everyone counts. We need a new spirit of community, a sense that we are all in this together, or the American Dream will continue to wither. Our destiny is bound up in the destiny of every other American."
